Introduction to Copyright

Join SSP for a virtual seminar on all the ins and outs of copyright. Rick Anderson, University Librarian at Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library, will provide an overview of the topic, starting with the purpose of copyright and then moving on to how it works. Along the way, he’ll cover some of the most pressing issues and questions around copyright:
• fair use
• licensing rights
• open access vs public access
• myths about authorship and copyright
• helping others understand copyright basics
This interactive seminar will be of interest to anyone working in scholarly communications whose work touches on copyright.

Rick Anderson, Brigham Young University
Rick Anderson is University Librarian of Brigham Young University. He has worked previously as a bibliographer for YBP, Inc., as Head Acquisitions Librarian for the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, as Director of Resource Acquisition at the University of Nevada, Reno, and as Associate Dean for Collections & Scholarly Communication at the University of Utah. He serves on numerous editorial and advisory boards and is a regular contributor to the Scholarly Kitchen blog. He has served as president of NASIG and of the Society for Scholarly Publishing and is a recipient of the HARRASSOWITZ Leadership in Library Acquisitions Award. Rick is the author of three books, including Scholarly Communication: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University Press, 2018).
