Transformation, Trust, and Transparency

The pace of change in our industry continues unabated, with seismic shifts in areas such as the dissemination of research, business models, and the nature of the workplace.  And yet, while pressure for change has become the new normal, fundamental change has proved more elusive. We invite you to join us in highlighting the Trust and Transparency issues that underlie many of the challenges we face and exploring what it takes to create more meaningful Transformation in scholarly publishing.


Our aim is to present an in-person meeting in Portland with a virtual attendance option that includes a mix of live and on-demand content.  That said, the health and safety of our attendees is a prime concern, and we will monitor and be ready to modify plans as needed. Registration will open in February. 

As always, the SSP community continues to focus on bringing together academics, funders, librarians, publishers, service providers, technologists, and countless others with a communal interest and stake in disseminating  scholarly information. We look to the 45th Annual Meeting as an opportunity to continue this tradition and welcome all colleagues and community stakeholders, old and new.

Keynote Address | Wednesday, May 31

Elisabeth BikElisabeth Bik, PhD

Science Consultant, Harbors-Bik LLC

Elisabeth Bik, PhD is a Dutch-American microbiologist who has worked for 15 years at Stanford University and 2 years in industry. Since 2019, she is a science integrity volunteer and consultant who scans the biomedical literature for images or other data of concern and has reported over 6,000 scientific papers. She can often be found discussing science papers on Twitter at @MicrobiomDigest, writing for her blog ScienceIntegrityDigest, or searching the biomedical literature for inappropriately duplicated or manipulated photographic images and plagiarized text. She has reported over 6,000 papers for issues with image duplication or other concerns. Her work has been featured in Nature, Science, the New Yorker, the New York Times, Washington Post, the Guardian, and The Times (UK).  Her work has resulted in over 900 retracted and another 900 corrected papers. For her work on exposing threats to research integrity, she received the 2021 John Maddox Prize.

Featured Plenary | Thursday, June 1

The Evolving Knowledge Ecosystem

In this plenary panel session, hear from industry leaders as they talk about the societal and economic pressures driving our industry today and what they tell us about the future. Roger Schonfeld (ITHAKA S+R) will moderate a candid discussion that addresses some of the most exciting opportunities and the greatest challenges shaping the present and future of scholarly communication. The session will engage with the ways leading companies are addressing these issues and changes, and what your organization might want to consider as you plan for the future of your programs.

Educational Sessions
Twenty four educational sessions over 2 days led by top industry experts complementing four plenary sessions that are the heart of the SSP Annual Meeting. 

Networking
Attendees will enjoy ample opportunities for meeting colleagues and sharing ideas at evening receptions, interactive lunches, facilitated networking sessions, and other events.

Community Project
SSP is supporting local Portland non-profit, Street Books, a bicycle-powered mobile library, serving people who live outside in Portland. Attendees are enoucouraged to bring new or use paperback books or reading glasses to donate. 

Poster Sessions
Posters will be available for viewing throughout the meeting. During the Poster Sessions, you can chat with presenters as you browse the various posters.  

Industry Breakout Sessions
Industry thought-leaders share advice, case studies, expertise and the latest market solutions in these 30-minute sessions starting at noon on Wednesday.  

Exhibitors Marketplace 
Meet with exhibitors and sponsors and see what new innovations are being offered by industry service providers. The Marketplace is accessible throughout the duration of the meeting, but exhibitors will be available during breaks and nightly receptions. 

Previews Session
This "lightning round" plenary offers the chance to learn more about the industry's newest and most innovative products, platforms, and/or content in 5-minute, back to back presentations. Attendees will leave with exposure to a wide breadth of content on new and updated products of interest to the scholarly publishing community.

Virtual Attendance Option
All keynotes, plenary sessions, and selected educational sessions (one per timeslot) will be streamed live. All sessions will be recorded and available on-demand. Participants can chat in real time with other virtual attendees via the virtual meeting platform and several additional online networking opportunities will also be available for virtual attendees.
