About Baltimore

Baltimore is a port city in the Mid-Atlantic United States and the most populous city in the state of Maryland. Situated on the Port of Baltimore, the town was formally established in 1729. As the 30th-most populated city in the U.S. and most populated city in Maryland, Baltimore is a center of culture and history in the region. Baltimore has the most public statues and monuments, per capita, of any city in the United States. More than 65,000 buildings, nearly one third of the city’s total, are designated as historic in the National Register, more than any other city in the country. Baltimore has a diverse array of cultural museums, including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum, which are internationally renowned for their collections. Four designated arts and entertainment districts are situated in the city: The Pennsylvania Avenue Black Arts and Entertainment District, Station North Arts and Entertainment District, Highlandtown Arts District, and the Bromo Arts & Entertainment District. These host a variety of performing arts, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Peabody Institute music conservatory, the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, and many others.
