AI is becoming an important tool in the scientific community and also in the publishing industry. But how do you develop the skillset to make use of this emerging technology? And how do you develop a publishing career path afterward? Join us for a conversation with scholarly communications professionals who have built their careers in AI. Hear their career path stories and ask questions about what AI can do for your career and your society or organization.

Ginny PittmanGinny Pittman, Executive Publisher, Elsevier

Ginny is Executive Publisher at Elsevier, leading the US orthopaedics portfolio with 18 open access and subscription journals. In 25 years of scholarly research publishing and educational product development, she has made an impact in the healthcare and biotech fields at Mary Ann Liebert, Wolters Kluwer and Wiley. She has tackled new approaches to society strategy, portfolio development, metrics, and author/editor training and tools, earning awards for innovation, and is a member of SSP's Washington, DC Regional Group.

Chhavi ChauhanChhavi Chauhan, PhD, ELS Director of Scientific Outreach, The American Society for Investigative Pathology

Dr. Chhavi Chauhan works as Director for Scientific Outreach at the American Society for Investigative Pathology and Director of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program at the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. She is one of the leaders of the Women in AI Ethics Collective and an expert at the AI Policy Exchange.    

She is a biomedical researcher, expert scholarly communicator, and a sought after mentor in the fields of scientific research, scholarly publishing, and AI Ethics, especially for women and minorities. She is a thought leader, a renowned international speaker, and a strong advocate for equitable and accessible healthcare.  She sits at the intersection of scientific research, scholarly communications, and AI Ethics in Healthcare.  

Her vision is to provide equitable personalized healthcare to all, beyond geographies, and despite socioeconomic disparities.  

Neil Blair ChristensenNeil Blair Christensen, Director of Partnership Solutions, Research Square

Neil leads Research Square Company’s and American Journal Experts' B2B sales, account management, and business development functions outside of China. He drives growth strategy and builds the company’s customer base of research institutions and scholarly publishing organizations. He also plays a pivotal role in driving the company’s SaaS and API strategy and bringing its AI-based services to market.

He has built a 20-year career in scholarly publishing, holding a range of roles in business development, sales, and editorial for scholarly publishing organizations in Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific, including Munksgaard, Blackwell, NPG, Wiley, and UC Press. In 2017, his business development focus led to leading technology sales in North America for Unsilo, a text intelligence/ AI startup, and in 2020 he moved to Research Square Company to pursue a scaled product mix of human and AI-enabled services.

John MaloneJohn Malone, Assistant Director, Career Coach MS Information Systems, University of Maryland

John is the Assistant Director, Full-time MBA and Specialty Masters Programming Career Coach at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. He is the Technology Industry Career Subject Matter Expert within the business school and follows employment trends that will impact curriculum and career preparation for the business school students he serves.

For the 13 years prior to his time at Smith, John owned an IT Consulting and Managed Services firm specializing in business development process and systems strategy. He has held senior management positions in the advertising, internet access services and textbook publishing industries. He has owned or been a principal partner in multiple start-ups.

In addition to his day job, John founded two social enterprise organizations to facilitate the development of small-scale, for-profit, locally run enterprises in rural India, Africa and Brazil whose focus was to produce or provide safe, clean water and energy to poor communities.

 

Rick MisraRick Misra, PhD, Principal Product Manager, Elsevier

Rick Misra is a Principal Product Manager at Elsevier where he leverages NLP and machine learning techniques for knowledge extraction and representation in the STEM fields.  He received his PhD in neuroscience at the University of Illinois and later did his postdoctoral research at the Scripps Research Institute. While there he collaborated with Elsevier on building 3D brain imaging and mapping software which introduced him to the scientific publishing domain.
