An international panel will discuss three ethical challenges in scholarly publishing today: citation leakage, text recycling, and ethical issues around data publishing. Speakers will present examples of how organizations are working to address these challenges from within the industry. 

Moderator: 

Dr. Muhammad Imtiaz Subhani, ILMA University, Pakistan
Dr. Subhani is an award-winning editor. He is doing a post-doctorate in open science with Federal University of Goias, Brazil and holds a PhD from Iqra University, Pakistan, in financial econometrics. Dr. Subhani is an ambassador for the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) and a professor and Dean of the Business School at ILMA University, Pakistan. He also volunteers for the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) as an education committee member, while he is also a member of Creative Commons Global Network, CC Open GLAM, and Research Data Publishing Ethics, FORCE 11. He is a scientific publishing consultant and a technical committee member of HEC Journals’ Recognition System at the Higher Education Commission, Government of Pakistan. Dr. Subhani is also an editor at PLOS ONE. He is a prolific scientific author of around 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Dr. Gareth Dyke, Director of Global Content, Research Square
Gareth is a prolific scientific author who has published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals over the last 20 years, including in Nature, Science, Proceedings of the National Academy (USA) and other high-profile outlets. His research has been widely covered in the media and he is often invited to present talks and lead workshops around the world, most recently in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Colombia, Spain, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia. Workshops in China run by Gareth in 2019 were attended by more than 5,000 colleagues. He has written numerous news and other popular articles including in Scientific American, New Scientist, and Nature and is a regular contributor to The Conversation (scientific news website).

He also manages the Taylor & Francis journal Historical Biology as Editor-in-Chief. Gareth has mentored students at all levels (Masters, PhD, Adult Education) and has developed a large range of in-class teaching techniques. He has worked in the USA, Ireland, and the UK, including for more than 20 years as a full-time University academic (University College Dublin, National Oceanography Centre University of Southampton).
Gareth is uniquely positioned to teach and advise with authority on all aspects of the scientific publishing process, grant writing, and personal development as he is an experienced researcher, reviewer, editor, and journal manager with a strong background in technical and popular writing. 

Marie McVeigh, Lead, Peer Review Operations & Publication Integrity, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.
Marie has recently joined Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. to head Peer Review Operations for their suite of over 100 scholarly journals.  She came to Mary Ann Liebert from Clarivate, where, in 2017, she led the development of Journal Citation Reports™, later moving to the editorial team as Head of Editorial Integrity. Prior to Clarivate, she had roles in primary publishing, in A&I Analytics providers, and in author services, but her career began at the Institute for Scientific Information™ (ISI) as the Life Sciences Selections Editor. She participated in the first launch of Web of Science, led production and development of the Journal Citation Reports™ annual data, and the surveillance and review of citation metrics. At ISI, she studied under Dr. Eugene Garfield and continues research in bibliometrics, ethics in publishing and citation metrics, and the scholarly value of citation indexing.

 

 

Matt Hodgkinson, Research Integrity Manager, United Kingdom Research Integrity Office (UKRIO)
Matt is a Research Integrity Manager at the UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO), supporting the work of the charity including the advisory service and the development of policies and publications. He has a BA (Hons) in Biological Science from Oxford and an MSc in Genetics from Cambridge. He worked in open access science journal publishing for 18 years, developing expertise in peer review, critical appraisal, editorial policy, and publication ethics as an editor at BMC and PLOS and then heading the Research Integrity team at Hindawi. He is a council member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and Treasurer of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE).
