2025 SSP Open Access Workshop

Open Access: Understanding Mission, Models, and Mindsets

Wednesday, July 23, 2025
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM ET

Close all those tabs, shut down your notifications, and join us! Our highly interactive, 101-style virtual OA workshop is back by popular demand and will be of interest to both early-career professionals as well as those more experienced in scholarly communications who want to enhance their understanding of the latest developments.

Over the past two decades, Open Access publishing has evolved from an ideal into a widely accepted practice in scholarly communications. But perspectives on who should fund OA, how it is implemented, and to what extent content is truly “open” can vary widely depending on the stakeholder—researcher, librarian, funder, publisher, or reader. How OA is defined and how widely it is adopted also differ among institutions, regions, and disciplines. Participants in this introductory workshop will learn about the history and evolution of OA principles and practices, starting from the Budapest Open Access Initiative through to Plan S and the recent OSTP memo, with particular emphasis on distinguishing green and gold OA. Open access publishing is funded through a variety of different models, and participants will explore a range of approaches, including micropayments, transformative agreements, pure publish agreements, memberships, and collective action. Participants will consider how these issues impact publishing at both the article and journal level and learn about the various business models, their applicability in different contexts, and how they can complement one another. While primarily focused on journals, open access monograph business models will also be incorporated.

Attendees from past workshops described it as “extremely useful,” “very informative,” and “packed with information,” so don’t miss this opportunity!
