Planning for Plan S

Since the Open Access initiative was launched in September 2018 by cOAlition S, publishing industry stakeholders have struggled to make sense of – and prepare for – Plan S. Many details involving Plan S are not yet certain, including how many national funders will sign on and how journal compliance will be tracked and enforced. Guidelines such as the cap on Article Processing Charges are also in active discussion. What is clear, however, is that neither the upcoming 2020 deadline nor the principles themselves will likely change; Plan S is poised to impact nearly every sector of publishing and the research communities they support.
 
In our next SSP Durham regional meeting on April 25, we will open the meeting with a presentation on Plan S, followed by a moderated panel of experts. We aim to create a forum for local stakeholders to share their perspectives and concerns as we explore the wide-ranging implications of Plan S and the potential for collaboration on practical solutions.
