2020 SSP Webinar: Moving Beyond Good Intentions: Creating a Diverse and Inclusive Community through Commitment and Action

The proliferation of statements in support of social justice, antiracism, and solidary with Black lives in response to police brutality in the spring of 2020 has inspired a greater urgency in the need to take decisive actions. Like their counterparts in the academy, industry, and government, leaders of professional societies must implement substantive and multi-pronged strategies to remove systemic racism in our community. The American Geophysical Union (AGU), a leader and advocate for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Earth and space sciences worldwide, has now moved to advance and implement steps to remedy inequities in science.
As members of the AGU Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee as well as leaders in their respective fields, speakers Vernon Morris and Lisa White are charged with recommending the steps AGU staff and members should take across all AGU programs to achieve the goals and objectives outlined in the society’s Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan. Their presentation will discuss actionable strategies to ensure these goals are met as well as ways collaborators and stakeholders can be more effective. Beyond listening, true change requires substantial commitment to disruptive change and a willingness to cultivate a culture that embraces diversity and respect for inclusive practices.

Vernon R. Morris, Director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, Arizona State University
Dr. Vernon R. Morris is Director of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences within the New College at Arizona State University. Past positions held include Founding Director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program at Howard University, Professor of Chemistry and Atmospheric Sciences at Howard University, and Founding Director of the NOAA Cooperative Science Center for Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Morris has mentored over 150 students from Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other racialized groups, including 20 PhDs and 20 MS students as primary graduate advisor. His hands-on outreach programs and informal science education/exposure projects have reached over 50,000 students worldwide. An atmospheric scientist by training, he is a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. He was awarded the Charles Anderson Award by the American Meteorological Society as well as the A.T. Weathers Award for Technical Achievement National Technical Association. Dr. Morris currently serves on the EPA Clean Air Act Advisory Committee, the American Geophysical Unions Diversity and Inclusion Committee, the UCAR Board of Trustees, and the American Meteorological Society Executive Council. Dr. Morris recently initiated “No Time for Silence”; a call to action for leaders in the geosciences community that recommends specific changes that will help create an anti-racist scientific community. Dr. Morris’ research focuses on the chemical evolution of atmospheric particulate during transport and residence times in the lower troposphere and the implications to aerobiology, climate, and cloud processes. He has served as Chief Scientist for eleven trans-Atlantic science expeditions (the AERosols and Ocean Science Expeditions – AEROSE) aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) class-1 research vessel, the Ronald H. Brown. Dr. Morris holds degrees from Morehouse College (B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics) and the Georgia Institute of Technology (Ph.D. in Geophysical Sciences).
Lisa D. White, Director of Education at the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California, Berkeley
Dr. Lisa D. White is Director of Education at the Museum of Paleontology at the University of California, Berkeley. Past positions held include Professor of Geosciences at San Francisco State University, Geosciences Department Chair, and Associate Dean of the College of Science and Engineering at San Francisco State University. Dr. White has extensive experience with science education programs for underrepresented students and she is active in efforts to increase diversity in the geosciences. A micropaleontologist by training and Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences and the Geological Society of America, Dr. White was the inaugural recipient of the GSA Bromery Award for Minorities. As Chair of the American Geophysical Union Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, Dr. White works to create a culture that embraces diversity and respect in the advancement of Earth and space sciences, and helps AGU become a model organization for inclusive practices. As the education director at the Museum of Paleontology, she develops and disseminates learning materials on evolution and the fossil record, virtual geological field experiences, and the nature and process of science. Dr. White holds degrees from San Francisco State University (B.A. in Geology) and the University of California at Santa Cruz (Ph.D. in Earth Sciences).
