2021 SSP Webinar: Early Career Edition: A Quick Tour of Tech for Early-Career Professionals in Scholarly Communications

Technology is a core part of scholarly publishing, not only serving as the foundation for content delivery, but also rapidly reshaping what’s possible in our field. For early career professionals, this webinar will provide a high-level overview of existing core technologies that are firmly embedded within publisher workflows, as well as new technologies currently being trialed and emerging technologies that have great potential for our workflows. Early career professionals are encouraged to attend to find out what they need to know to advance in an increasingly technology-supported environment.

Jeff Froustet is a data administrator for the American Society of Civil Engineers, where he helps manage the use and distribution of publication metadata.

Melissa Harrison, Head of Production Operations, eLife Sciences Publications
Melissa Harrison, Head of Production Operations at eLife, has over 20 years of experience in STM publishing. Her career has focused on journal publishing and the production process. Over this time she has embraced the electronic benefits of online publishing and the use of technology to speed up and improve the process. She is committed to ope -access publishing and open science initiatives, including the benefits of mining and discoverability of content for the further enhancement of research and dissemination, including the use of PID and other identifiers to enable linking and connections. Melissa is Chair of JATS4R, board member of Crossref, and has also contributed to the community via Force11 working groups, JATS4R recommendations, and other initiatives and working groups.

Andrew Robinson has more than 30 years of experience in the areas of content platforms, processing, and delivery. As Principal Consultant at Copyright Clearance Center (CCC), Andrew works with clients to drive innovation in their content operations and transformation of capability through the optimal use of technology to fit their unique business strategy. Through numerous client engagements, he has cultivated a reputation as a trusted partner and advisor due to his track record of delivering success via teams of engaged and motivated people across multiple cultures, languages, and continents. Andrew CCC subsidiary, in 2012 as Project Manager, responsible for project delivery, statements of work, business proposals, and client engagement. Prior to CCC, Andrew was Regional Manager, Consulting Delivery Group for Europe at ShipNet AS, where he managed a team of project managers and business consultants across Europe and Asia who implemented business critical systems for clients. Earlier, he held the positions of ePublishing Director for BSI Group; Head of eServices for Jane’s Information Group; and Information Development Manager for Reed Business Information.

Allison BelanAllison Belan, Duke University Press
Allison C. Belan is the Director for Strategic Innovation and Services at Duke University Press. Allison works to align all aspects of the Press’s digital publishing strategy and operations to build a digital presence and technology infrastructure that connects scholars and thinkers to Duke University Press’s publications. Allison is the director of the Scholarly Publishing Collective, an initiative that provides infrastructure services such as hosting and digital fulfillment to non-profit journal publishers and scholarly societies.

 

Dr. Chhavi Chauhan Dr. Chhavi Chauhan works as Director for Scientific Outreach at the American Society for Investigative Pathology and Director of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program at the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. She is one of the leaders of the Women in AI Ethics Collective and an expert at the AI Policy Exchange.

She is a biomedical researcher, expert scholarly communicator, and a sought after mentor in the fields of scientific research, scholarly publishing, and AI Ethics, especially for women and minorities. She is a thought leader, a renowned international speaker, and a strong advocate for equitable and accessible healthcare. She sits at the intersection of scientific research, scholarly communications, and AI Ethics in Healthcare.

Her vision is to provide equitable personalized healthcare to all, beyond geographies, and despite socioeconomic disparities.
