Getting to the Next Level: An Exploration of Career Development for Early-Career Professionals in Scholarly Communications

In scholarly publishing, everyone has a unique story about how they’ve ended up in their role. This webinar will focus on how early career professionals might approach their career decisions and “get to the next level,” be that pivoting to a different area of publishing, moving laterally, or transitioning to a position with more responsibility. Panelists will share their experience and the resources and tools they found helpful in their career journeys.

Josephine SciortinoJosephine Sciortino, Managing Editor, Canadian Science Publishing

Josephine E. Sciortino is Managing Editor at Canadian Science Publishing, where she manages a team of scientific publishing and production editors for eight scientific journals. She also teaches a class at GWU, The Professional Editor. She has worked in scholarly publishing for over 20 years with various biomedical societies in the management of their specialty journals, including the Canadian Urological Association Journal (as the inaugural managing editor) and the Canadian Medical Association Journal. She is also an active volunteer at her local library in Montreal, Canada, where she lives with her husband and two teenage daughters.

Tiffany ClarkTiffany Clark, Digital Publications Specialist, American Society of Hematology

Tiffany Clark is Digital Publications Specialist at the American Society of Hematology (ASH). She started her publishing career six years ago in editorial but now works with the journal’s digital products, including the Blood podcast, weekly journal newsletters, and other digital-based editorial products. She also manages the social media strategy for ASH’s journals, Blood and Blood Advances. Tiffany received her BA in English from the University of Virginia and recently graduated from the George Washington University in 2020 with a master’s degree in publishing. She also has participated in SSP’s mentorship program.

 

 

 

Sarah LevineSarah Levine, Journals Publisher, Oxford University Press

Sarah Levine is a journals publisher at Oxford University Press, where she manages a list of 15 society-owned social science journals. Her responsibilities center on relationship development and maintenance, and in her role she advises societies and editors on evolving publishing trends, including journal sales models and funding policies; analyzes competitive positioning; and prepares bids for journal acquisition. Prior to joining OUP in January of this year, Levine worked for eight years at the American Academy of Religion, where she was initially hired as a publishing and external relations associate and eventually ran the Academy’s small publications department, which publishes a peer-reviewed journal and five book series in partnership with OUP, and launched a born-digital self-published book review website in 2017.

 

Kristine KrebsKristine Krebs, Managing Editor, American Society for Microbiology

Kristine Krebs is a Managing Editor at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) where she oversees the daily operations of a portfolio of journals and collaborates with her editors in chief on special projects and new initiatives. Prior to joining ASM in December 2021, she was with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) for five years, where she learned the nuts and bolts of society-published journals, and led several initiatives for AACP’s journal, the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. Some of these initiatives include introducing early release/publish ahead of print, implementing a formal reviewer recognition program, engaging its editorial board to offer webinars and workshops on publishing, and launching AJPE’s website on a new platform.
Kristine received her MPS in publishing from George Washington University in 2022 and a BA in journalism and international studies from American University. She is a 2021–2022 Society for Scholarly Publishing Fellow.

 

 

 

Ashley Warren, SAGE Publishing 

Ashley Warren is currently Marketing Communications Manager at SAGE Publications, leading a team within open access to bring in original research for approximately 150 journals. She was recently appointed to spearhead communications strategy for all of SAGE’s OA Special Collections, working closely with the editorial team to effectively discover and disseminate research across the globe. Before joining SAGE, Ashley worked in communications-focused roles in TV and multimedia, and also served as Managing Editor for GW’s Journal of Ethics in Publishing. Ashley recently graduated from George Washington University with her master’s degree in publishing, and received her BA in English Literature from the University of Virginia. She lives in Richmond, VA with her husband, three kids, and a giant puppy.
