This webinar will discuss how publishers can work with libraries in supporting scholarly communication initiatives amidst federal cuts, the rise of AI, and other uncertainties. Today’s library is facing many challenges, and the relationship between publisher and library is as important as ever. Our panelists will discuss current library pressures overall as well as specific areas of concern such as the future of transformative agreements, subscription based models, and more.

Melissa Chim, Scholarly Communications Librarian, Excelsior University
Melissa Chim is the first Scholarly Communications Librarian at Excelsior University where she both created and manages the university’s scholarly publishing platform and institutional repository. She holds an MLIS from St. John’s University and an MA in History from Queen Mary, the University of London, and hold certificates in open education and Creative Commons licensing. She was a SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow for their 2022-23 cohort, a Society for Scholarly Publishing Fellow for 2024, an ASAPbio Fellow for 2024, and a member of the Fulbright Specialist Roster from 2024–2027.

Charles Watkinson, Associate University Librarian, Publishing, and Director, University of Michigan Press
Charles manages the Publishing division of the U-M Library (publishing.umich.edu) which is composed of three parts - University of Michigan Press (UMP), Michigan Publishing Services (MPS), and Deep Blue repository and research data services (DBRRDS). Professionally, he has worked at University of Michigan since 2014. Previously he was in a similar position at Purdue University Libraries and Director of Publications at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He has have a BA/MA from University of Cambridge in Archaeology and Anthropology and an MBA from Oxford Brookes University.
Annelise Doll, Scholarly Communications Librarian, Michigan Technological University
As a librarian at Michigan Technological University, Annelise Doll specializes in assisting authors, researchers, and innovators to effectively share, preserve, and protect their intellectual property and scholarship through a variety of means. She serves as an administrator for Digital Commons @ Michigan Tech, the university's institutional repository, which includes the management of the processes related to assigning ISBNs and DOIs for repository content. She specializes in open educational resources (OER) and Creative Commons licensing and serves as chair of Michigan Tech's Committee for Accessible and Affordable Learning Materials (CAALM). She is also Michigan Tech's administrator for the DMPTool and the representative for the university's Patent and Trademark Resource Center. She has been involved in Lean and Continuous Improvement on campus since 2016 as a practitioner and facilitator.
Michael Levine-Clark, Dean and Director at University of Denver Libraries
As Dean of the University of Denver Libraries since 2016, Michael Levine-Clark oversees the Anderson Academic Commons—a vibrant, innovative, student-focused space that combines the library with other academic support services; the Bonfils-Stanton Music Library; and the Hampden Center – an off-campus facility where the bulk of the collections are housed.
Michael has been at DU since 1999 where he has held a variety of other positions, including Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication and Collections services, Collections Librarian, and Reference Librarian.
