Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a speculative technology in scholarly communications—it is embedded in the daily workflows of researchers, students, and content consumers. There is however an organizational knowledge gap to understand how these tools are used, what issues they address, or how they impact information discovery, reading, synthesis, and decision-making. This one-hour virtual session will examine real-world, practitioner-driven use cases that illustrate AI’s influence on research behaviors and content consumption patterns across disciplines and career stages. Panelists will share concrete examples of AI use in literature review, summarization, data interpretation, workflow acceleration, and content consumption.
The session will also explore the implications of these evolving practices for publishers, societies, and service providers, including trust, transparency, and emerging ethical considerations. When relevant, a concise case presentation will illustrate how ethical considerations arise in the daily application of AI and how individuals address these issues in practice.
Key Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify how researchers and readers are currently using AI tools in everyday scholarly and educational workflows, beyond formal pilot programs.
- Understand how AI is changing information consumption patterns, including reading behavior, search strategies, synthesis, and reliance on primary versus secondary sources.
- Distinguish between experimental, assistive, and decision-shaping uses of AI, and assess where the greatest opportunities and risks lie for scholarly organizations.
- Recognize emerging ethical considerations associated with routine AI use, including transparency, attribution, bias, and over-reliance on automated outputs.
- Translate observed user behaviors into actionable insights for publishing strategy, product development, policy setting, and community education.
This session is designed to equip SSP members with grounded insight into current AI usage patterns—helping organizations respond thoughtfully, realistically, and responsibly to rapidly evolving user practices.

Giovanni Cacciamani, Urologist and surgeon-scientist
Dr. Giovanni Cacciamani is an internationally recognized urologist and surgeon-scientist specializing in oncological diseases, patient safety, and the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare. He is an Associate Professor of Urology and Radiology Research at the University of Southern California (USC) and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Center for Surgical and Clinical Applications in Urology, leading research at the intersection of urology, technology, and clinical innovation. Dr. Cacciamani serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Urology for the Innovation and AI section. He has authored around 350 scientific publications (H-Index 40) and delivered more than 200 lectures worldwide on emerging technologies, AI, and digital medicine in urology. His laboratory at USC is currently exploring Generative AI applications in healthcare, with the goal of making AI tools practical and accessible for physicians. Dr. Cacciamani is the Principal Investigator of the CANGARU global initiative, which promotes the ethical use of Generative AI in academia. He is also co-founder of EditorAI Pro and CTO of Pub2Post, an agent-AI solution designed to expand the global dissemination and accessibility of scholarly research.
Meaghan Brown, Associate Director Digital at John Carter Brown Library
Dr. Meaghan J. Brown, PhD and MLS, is the Associate Director of Digital Asset Management at the John Carter Brown Library in Providence, RI. She has previously served as a Digital Production Editor at the Folger Shakespeare Library, as a member of the TEI Technical Council, and as a senior program officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities, overseeing the first iterations of the Humanities Research Centers on Artificial Intelligence program. Her research has ranged from data modeling and documentary editing to studies of sixteenth-century English propaganda to bibliometric analyses of how scholars cite rare book libraries (spoiler: not well). She is deeply interested in the implications of AI for library and museum spaces and the research they support.
